Young Swan Harry Cunningham will be sidelined for a number of weeks after tearing the medial ligament in his left knee in Sunday’s reserves clash in Canberra.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the 19-year-old landed awkwardly on his knee in the second quarter of the Swans reserves 196-point win over Tuggeranong and confirmed that scans this week revealed a medial tear.

“He landed pretty awkwardly in a marking contest and his knee buckled under him and got caught underneath him and he actually gave his medial ligament a good tearing,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“They usually take around 4-6 weeks, but we’ll see how he responds.

“Some of them can come up a bit quicker than others but we’ll know more as the next couple of days go on.

“He’s actually improved quite a bit from yesterday to today, but at this stage he’s probably out for a month.”

In other injury news, Swans defender Rhyce Shaw is set to miss another week of football after failing to recover from a lower abdominal strain sustained in the Swans clash with the Gold Coast Suns two weeks ago.

Cameron said the 31-year-old would miss Friday night’s round four clash against the Cats, and would also not take part in team training tomorrow morning.

“This weekend we don’t think he’s going to quite make it,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“He hasn’t quite improved as we thought he might from last week to this week.

“He’s got a strain to that lower abdominal muscle and it’s quite an important muscle for everything that you do and every movement that you make.”

Cameron said the club was hopeful the defender would be fit to join his team mates on their flight to New Zealand next Monday, ahead of the Swans ANZAC Day clash with St Kilda in Wellington.

“We don’t think he’s going to be able to train tomorrow to be ready for the Friday night game, so we’re going to need to hold him back for next week,” he said.

“We’re hopeful he’ll be right to get on the plane on Monday.”
