Headlines are Ron Wilson’s life.
The Swans ambassador and veteran newsreader, once on everyone’s television sets for Network Ten and now riding the sound waves with Smooth FM, has been front and centre to the headlines that matter for more than 40 years.
“Radio for me has been a long time love,” Wilson explained.
“I spent 34 years at Network Ten but I’ve actually worked at 10 radio stations over my career so radio is very much in my blood as well.
“It’s good to get back to that, I’m really happy to be here…it gives me an opportunity to throw the Swans name out in the odd bulletin so I’m pretty happy about that too.”
The Swans are no strangers to hitting the headlines, for all the right reasons, and Wilson loves it when they do.
Whether it’s a dashing run or miraculous goal in front of a packed SCG crowd, Swans utility Lewis Jetta loves a highlight.
The goal-sneak and dashing half-back is one of Wilson’s favourite players for that exact reason.
“The first time I saw him play, Jetta took his first mark and streaked down the field, I saw the whole club get up and cheer him,” Wilson recalled. “I thought that was a brilliant moment for the Swans.
“It showed the culture of the club, getting behind young talent coming through. To me that’s the essence of what the Swans are all about.
“There have been lots of moments on the field where you think ‘that’s fantastic’, but that one really got me.”
