Jack Hiscox used his running power with great effect on Wednesday, blitzing the field in the Sydney Swans’ pre-season 3km time trial.
A former 800m national champion, Hiscox followed on from last season’s breathtaking run with another dominant display around Moore Park.
“It wasn’t my best run but I was still pretty happy considering the conditions,” an exhausted Hiscox said after the session.
“That head wind made things difficult. When we came back towards Lakeside Oval it was in your face the whole way.
“I had to use the tail wind coming back the other way to gain some ground.”
Hiscox was the pace setter from the very beginning, putting considerable meterage between himself and the rest of the field during the opening lap.
Nearing the final 500m however, Dane Rampe mounted a late charge to push the reigning champ right to the finish line.
The duo’s efforts earned cheers from the coaching and fitness staff huddled at the finish while the likes of Jarrad McVeigh and Lance Franklin, part of the senior crop who were excused from the annual race, were equally impressed with the effort.
Dan Robinson, Dean Towers, Harry Cunningham and Brandon Jack weren’t too far behind.
“(Hiscox) is a freak,” Jack said. “He’s the best runner I’ve seen and sets a good pace for the boys to get to.”
“The boys all got the times they wanted which was good to see.”
The time trial wasn’t the only session on Wednesday’s agenda with blocks of sprint work, interchanged with skill sessions, keeping the group busy for the rest of the morning.
“I’m glad it wasn’t 30-40 degrees like it has been the past couple of sessions,” Jack added.
“It was a big hit out but it’s good to get the kilometres in the leg.”
