Collingwood defender Tom Langdon had a medical with Sydney on Tuesday as he ponders his future.
Langdon is out of contract but a standout finals series, particularly in the Pies' loss to West Coast in the decider, increased his value.
Head of Football Tom Harley told reporters on Wednesday of his side's interest in the 24-year-old.
"He flew to Sydney yesterday and had a medical," Harley said.
"We spoke to (Magpies list manager) Ned Guy about that on Monday, so we've been transparent with Collingwood.
"I think the incumbent club's always got the whip hand in that sense. We're just waiting for the finer details from that medical at this stage."
Langdon is travelling to Africa with brother and Fremantle wingman Ed Langdon, along with their father, as they prepare to climb Mt Kilimanjaro.
"We'll need to work on the wonders of technology to facilitate something, but we've certainly got an interest," Harley said.
Harley said the addition of Langdon would free up Callum Mills and Zak Jones to play midfield.
"I think (Langdon's) obviously had a good first four years to his career. Clearly his finals performances grabbed our attention. It wasn't just that (though)," Harley said.
"We've attacked this trade period with specific needs and we think we can add to our back half, which might free up some of our young, developing half-backs who we think are mids – Jones, Mills, those types."
