Good things come to those who wait.
That’s what George Hewett is realising ahead of his first AFL game on Saturday night.
Hewett, a hard running and flexible midfielder, was named as one of three Swans to make their AFL debut in the weekend’s season-opening blockbuster against Collingwood.
Heading into his third year on the list, it has been a waiting game for Hewett. Senior emergency on numerous occasions, the 21-year-old was finally delivered the news he had been waiting for.
“I was a bit shocked at first but very happy and excited for the weekend,” Hewett said.
“It has taken two years, a few injuries and had to bide my time in the reserves, so hopefully I can make it a good one.”
Hewett has been a consistent performer for the NEAFL Swans since being selected in the second round of the 2013 National Draft.
Averaging 26 possessions, including eight clearances and 6.5 tackles, per game at the lower level, Hewett was held in reserve many times throughout season 2015 but couldn’t quite grab that senior berth.
A strong NAB Challenge campaign helped his chances ahead of Thursday’s match committee.
After hearing the good news from coach John Longmire, Hewett quickly turned his attention to Saturday where he’ll look to capitalise on the opportunity.
“John just said to play my natural game,” Hewett added.
“He said I might be playing in a few different positions so I’ve just got to be confident and have a bit of a belief in what I do out there.”
Hewett is one of five new faces for the clash with Collingwood on Saturday night alongside fellow debutants Callum Mills and Tom Papley, along with experienced recruits Callum Sinclair and Michael Talia.
