The Sydney Swans have named five new faces for Saturday night’s season opener against Collingwood, including three debutants.

It’s the first time in 26 years that the Swans will have three first-gamers playing in the same match, with Callum Mills, George Hewett and elevated rookie Tom Papley named for the blockbuster clash against the Magpies at the SCG.

The trio join Callum Sinclair, an experienced ruckman who arrived during the trade period from West Coast, and Michael Talia, a bigger-bodied defender from the Western Bulldogs, as the five inclusions for Saturday’s clash.

Speaking for Centrum Team Selection, senior coach John Longmire said having so many fresh faces is a positive.

“It’s really exciting for the Club, it doesn’t happen too often having three debutants in Round 1,” he said.

“Collingwood have been in great form over the pre-season so it’ll be a real challenge. We can’t wait – we’re on the SCG, the Magpies Army will be up for it – it’s fantastic for us to be able to do it Round 1.”

Taken with pick three in the 2015 National Draft after spending time in the QBE Sydney Swans Academy, Mills impressed across half-back and in the midfield in all three of the Swans’ NAB Challenge matches.

Papley, recently elevated off the rookie list, is a small forward who provides plenty of defensive pressure, which is exactly what the coaching staff will be asking of the 21-year-old against the Magpies.

Hewett, who was selected in the 2013 National Draft, has had to bide his time developing his running game at NEAFL level for the past two seasons.

“It’s a great story (for Tom) to come off the rookie list and go straight onto the senior list. We expect him to play as a small pressure forward,” Longmire added.

“Callum (Mills) can play at half-back or in the midfield, we’re sure he’ll be a good player wherever he goes. He’s certainly had a good start to his career over the pre-season games.

“(George) was the youngest player drafted a couple of years ago and he’s just done everything right, so he gets his chance as well.”

Not since Round 1, 1990, have three or more players made their AFL debut in the same game for the red and white.

Shane Fell, Brad Tunbridge, Jim West and a bloke by the name of Paul Kelly all made their first AFL appearances that afternoon.

Kelly’s name is synonymous with the No. 14 and spookily it will be the same number worn by Mills when he runs out on Saturday night.

The last time these two sides squared off was at the same venue in Round 20 last season where the Swans triumphed by 11 points in front of 38,308 fans.

Saturday night’s clash also marks the Swans’ 350th game at the SCG.
