Almost four months ago Tom Papley was digging holes as an apprentice plumber in suburban Melbourne.
It was business as usual. Or so he thought.
Little did the 21-year-old know everything was about to change.
The phone rang and before too long Papley was on his way to Sydney after being selected at pick 14 for the Swans in the 2016 Rookie Draft.
Weeks of gut running and team meetings later, Papley suddenly finds himself realising his AFL dream.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling, I’ve always dreamed of playing for the Sydney Swans and I’ve got my day on Saturday,” Papley told SwansTV.
“I can’t really explain it. It’s a great opportunity Horse (John Longmire) has given me so I’m really excited to run out with the boys.”
His debut on Saturday night means plenty, not only for him but for the extended family.
Tom’s grandfathers – Max Papley and Jeff Bray – played for the Swans in 1960s.
“Obviously it’s something pretty special. It will be good to have the family here watching me on Saturday night.”
The focus for the midfielder-turned-crumbing forward during the off-season was to simply find his feet at the top level.
Given an opportunity in the Swans’ final two NAB Challenge matches Papley didn’t disappoint, kicking three goals and impressing against GWS and Carlton to ultimately be rewarded with a spot in the starting line-up.
While the news of an impending AFL debut is still sinking in, Papley says all he’s thinking about is taking his game up to the Magpies on Saturday night.
“Horse basically told me to do what I do best, pressure the opposition in our forward line, and things will flow from there.”
Papley will be one of five new faces for the clash with Collingwood on Saturday night alongside fellow debutants Callum Mills and George Hewett, along with experienced recruits Callum Sinclair and Michael Talia.
