“It gives you a different perspective on life.”

There’s probably no better way for Harry Cunningham to describe the impact of the Sydney Swans’ endearing partnership with Redkite.

Over the past 15 years, Sydney has worked closely with the Australian charity to help raise funds for patients and their families dealing with childhood cancer through special events.

Other ways have included paying regular visits to the oncology ward at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.

Like Brett Kirk and Rhyce Shaw before him, Cunningham has been at the forefront of these days which involved anything from playing musical instruments and leading sing-alongs to just simply being there for the patient and family in such a difficult time.

As Cunningham explains, it’s sometimes pushed him out of his comfort zone “but I’m up for doing anything that can get them smiling or laughing or to make their day a little brighter.”

The 22-year-old’s ambassadorship with Redkite, it seems, has not only impacted the lives of the patients he’s had the pleasure of spending time with.

“It has changed my life,” he said. “As AFL players there always things outside of footy that you can do and we’re privileged to be able to do this.”

Cunningham bought along first-year teammates Jordan Dawson, Tyrone Leonardis and Colin O’Riordan on a recent visit.

The newcomers didn’t know what to expect but, once there, were transfixed and taken back by the whole experience.

O’Riordan showcased some of his Irish heritage and jigged his little heart out while Dawson and Leonardis provided the backup vocals.

“Having a bit of fun and making the kids laugh, that’s what we’re here for,” Cunningham added.

Redkite will take centre stage during Sunday’s Round 13 encounter with Melbourne as part of the inaugural #RedDay at the SCG.

Swans fans are encouraged to give generously and wear red in support of Redkite and the partnership, with a limited number of red headbands available in return for a gold coin donation.

Tin rattlers will be scattered along Driver Avenue, outside the SCG, while Redkite families will participate in a guard of honour to welcome the Swans out onto the ground.

A celebrity AFL 9s match will also be played at the SCG before the main game.
