Having been born in Melbourne there is no question about how likely you are to be a keen AFL person. The only question is which team you will barrack for, and why.
I was born into a family where these things were already decided. My Dad, born and bred in South Melbourne territory, made sure my older brother, my younger sister and I understood the importance of the red and white “bloods’, and along with Mum we were a proud household of South Melbourne supporters.
The radio broadcasts of the games took over our kitchen every weekend. Then with television our focus moved to the lounge room. In my mid teens Dad and I went to as many games as we could, most often at the Lake Oval. It was through the 1960’s when were didn’t seem to be able to succeed beyond 8th position on the ladder, times were tough, and barracking seemed more important than ever. I still remember my red coat and boots worn proudly to those matches!
You can imagine our joy in 1970 to reach the first semi final, against St. Kilda. I even succeeded in the VFL ballot and got two seats, fence position.
The Swans have been in my life one way or another ever since those times. Even when working overseas in the 1970’s we were always trying to hear game broadcasts.
Living in Canberra since the late 1970’s AFL footy has continued to be a passion. As a Federal Member of Parliament, I was constantly berating any colleague north of the Murray who didn’t support the Swans.
Oh how we loved seeing those regular Swans games in Canberra. And now we get to every home game at least, with our Swans ACT Supporters Group.
Favourite Swans moments? Seeing Bob Skilton play – what a delight! That 1970 first semi final – the first in 25 years. The 2005 Premiership. And oh so many more!
Favourite players? This is difficult and the list is long..however, Bob Skilton, Peter Bedford, Max Papley, John Rantall, Paul Kelly, Brett Kirk, Jude Bolton and then there is the current crew!!!! – they all epitomise our ethos.
South Melbourne/Sydney Swans has grown into a great club - and I am so very proud to be a club Ambassador.
Bring on Season 2017!
