Executive General Manager of Football, Charlie Gardiner today thanked George Hewett for his contribution to the Sydney Swans, following the club’s decision not to match a restricted free-agency offer from the Carlton Football Club.
Gardiner said that following strong consideration, the club had elected not to match the lucrative, long term offer from Carlton.
“George is a terrific person and has been a wonderful contributor to our club over the past eight seasons,” Gardiner said.
“He is a great competitor and has been a really consistent player for us over his 120-game career.
“We regard him highly as both a player and person. He has been a very popular and respected player within the four walls of our club.
“While we are disappointed to see him depart, we wish him, Alice and Henry all the very best,” he said.
Hewett, 25, was drafted with pick 32 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft. He debuted in 2016 and played a total 120 games with the Swans.
The AFL has advised that the club will receive an end of Round 2 compensation selection in the upcoming NAB AFL draft.
