Sydney Swans co-captain Callum Mills joined GWS Giants captain Josh Kelly for the AFL Captain's Day in Sydney today with each state hosting their own captain's event in the lead up the 2022 Premiership Season.
Mills, who was at his first Captain's Day, said he was enjoying the captaincy role so far after being elevated from the leadership group this season.
"It's been great," Mills said.
"Luke and Dane have been great supporters and it's been a pretty seamless transition. It's really selfless of Joey (Josh Kennedy) to stand down and hand the baton over to me, it's something I am honoured and privileged to do."
"It's exciting, we have seen the transition of the team over the last few years. I am going to do everything in my power to bring the best out in the team and really take the team to where we want to go. I am excited by the challenge."
Mills said he and the team are excited to build on their 2021 season which saw them finish just percentage outside the top four. The Swans season may have surprised some but Mills said the side know what their output can be.
"Internally we understood what we are capable of doing, it may have shocked a few people last year but nothing really changes for us, we know what wins football games and we will be doing everything we can to do that this season."
After missing the Elimination Final in 2021 and having an interrupted pre-season due to an Achilles injury, Mills said he is back on track after getting through minutes in the AAMI Community Series game on Sunday against North Melbourne.
"My Achilles is tracking well, I played a half on the week-end and it's pulled up really well."
With just ten days until a Sydney Derby, Round 1 opener at Accor Stadium, excitement is building for the Swans return to Sydney. There is the added excitement of Lance Franklin's 1000 goal milestone, with the superstar forward just five goals away from a piece of history.
"It's an unbelievable achievement and something that may not happen again and testament to the footballer he has been for such a long time," Mills said.
