Sydney has survived a massive scare to defeat North Melbourne by 11 points in a thriller at the SCG on Saturday afternoon.

The Swans trailed for much of the last quarter, but hit the front with seven minutes remaining and held on to record a 13.8 (86) to 12.3 (75) victory.

Justin McInerney was the hero with the match-winning goal to cap off a sensational last quarter where he racked up 14 touches and four marks.

Isaac Heeney put the finishing touches on the win with a sensational solo effort with four seconds remaining.

Lance Franklin booted two goals in his first game back at the SCG since his 1000th goal milestone.
