The Sydney Swans will play on ANZAC Day for the 14th time in the club's history on Monday, when the team takes on Hawthorn in Launceston.
Four Swans players have played on the day twice previously, in 2013 and 2015, including Josh Kennedy, Dane Rampe, Luke Parker and Sam Reid.
Here are the players' reflections on playing on this special day:
“It's a great privilege to play on Anzac Day but I think the day in general is such an important day for the country to reflect, to honour and have a sense of gratitude for all the sacrifices that were made many years ago. Playing the game of football is great but the day is much more significant” – Josh Kennedy.
“I've been lucky to play in a few ANZAC Day matches and it's a special day for all Australians. To be able to celebrate the lives we have, to play the game we love and have the freedoms we do and reflect on the people that made that happen and the sacrifices they made. We played St Kilda in New Zealand in 2013 and before the game having 30,000 people in dead silence listening to the last post was incredible. We were lucky enough to get the win that day and it's one of those moments that you will hold onto at the end of your career – Luke Parker.
“It's a really important and a special day to be part of. The moment is not lost on us and it's a chance to reflect on those who have put us in a position to be able to go out and go do what we love, which is playing footy. It's a privilege to play another on Anzac Day and they are really special games to be part of. My lasting memory of playing on Anzac Day in years gone by is just gratitude. The minutes silence before the game is really powerful and you don't often get the chance to reflect on significance of certain things and this one is a particularly special one.” – Dane Rampe.
