Saturday’s loss to the Western Bulldogs provided many highlights despite the result, with four of the six nominations for this round’s Goal and Mark of the Year contenders stemming from the twilight clash at the SCG.

Two feature Sydney Swans stars Luke Parker and Heath Grundy.

Parker bought a little Euro 2016 to the SCG with a quick-thinking stab off the ground during the third quarter which zipped through the air, past the Bulldogs defenders and in for a goal.

There was some conjecture as to whether the ball had flicked the goal post’s padding on the way through.

The ball literally came within millimetres of brushing the post.

But, much to the relief of the Sydney Swans’ faithful and the star midfielder, the goal was given.

The celebration wasn’t as dramatic as the scenes witnessed in Europe with Parker getting to his feet, acknowledging the crowd and sharing a high-five with Lance Franklin.

What came next had commentators singing Grundy’s praises.

The Bulldogs kicked a long ball into the goal square where only Grundy and opposing number Jack Redpath stood.

Grundy, standing 192cm, gives away a couple of centimetres to the Dogs’ ruckman but that didn’t stop the veteran defender from winning the one-on-one battle.

With his left arm holding Redpath at bay, Grundy stuck out his right hand to cushion the ball’s landing before tucking the ball into chest for safekeeping.

Fox Footy commentator Gerard Healy immediately talking up Grundy’s season: “He’s never been an All Australian before, but he’ll be in the reckoning right now.”
