Will the batteries be recharged enough to repel an in form Richmond at the SCG on Friday night?
That’s what was put to coach John Longmire as the Swans return from the bye and prepare for the Round 13 blockbuster against the Tigers.
Despite dropping a game to West Coast last weekend, Richmond has been in a rich vein of form over the past five weeks to sit eighth on the ladder going into the final week of the current bye merry-go-round.
The Tigers’ scalps have included top of the table Fremantle, Essendon, Port Adelaide and Collingwood, wins spearheaded by a potent midfield group and equally potent tall forward line which are “giving them a look” according to an observant Longmire.
“They have been in some great form…their good players and playing really well,” Longmire said on Monday.
Clubs coming back from the week off experienced mixed results in Round 12. Three out of the six clubs dropped matches by significant margins (two of those were against fellow bye recipients) while Carlton bucked the trend.
Given the Swans’ sluggish starts in a number of games across the first half of the season, all eyes will be on Longmire’s charges to see how they respond from the nine-day break.
“Every team goes through it,” Longmire said.
“I think the players really enjoy having a few days off but given we have a Friday game we were back at it on Saturday. We had a good session here on Saturday and again today.
“Obviously that one day forward meant we had to get back into things pretty quickly.”
The mid-season break has given those on the mend ample time to recover from respective injuries and niggles including Ben McGlynn (hamstring) and Isaac Heeney (knee).
McGlynn is expected to miss one more week while Heeney will return to competitive football via the NEAFL.
