Carlton v Sydney Swans
Friday, May 20, 7:50pm
Marvel Stadium
INS: Colin O'Riordan
OUT: James Rowbottom (suspended)
The Sydney Swans have made one change for their blockbuster Friday night clash against Carlton, with Colin O'Riordan named to play his first senior game of 2022.
O'Riordan will replace James Rowbottom as the midfielder serves a one-match suspension after the AFL Tribunal upheld his rough conduct charge.
While Rowbottom will be a significant absence given his strong run of form in recent weeks, coach John Longmire praised O'Riordan's versatility as he prepares for a welcome return to AFL footy.
"He's a flexible player, he's got some experience and can play down back on different types of players and can play through the wing," Longmire said.
"He's a player that can give us some run when we need it but he's got a strong defensive side to his game as-well."
After recording an emphatic 58-point win over Essendon in Round 9 at the SCG, a victory over Carlton will see the Swans cement a place in the top-four.
Longmire says dominating the midfield is imperative if the Swans are to compete with one of the best teams in the competition.
"They're an excellent midfield and probably the best in the AFL at the moment. If you look at their centre bounce clearances - they're impactful," he said.
"We need to make sure we breakeven or try get our noses in-front of the midfield, around the clearances, the stoppages and get the territory going in our front half."
Round 10 and 11 of the AFL season will be Sir Doug Nicholls Round - a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and its contribution to the game.
The Swans will wear their new Marn Grook guernsey, Duguwaybul Yindyamangidyal, which represents the 19 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men who have played for the Sydney Swans, both in the past and the present.
