AFTER almost seven weeks of incessant questions and enormous interest in Adam Goodes and his much-discussed quad injury, the dual Brownlow medallist appears certain to finally return for the Sydney Swans on Friday night.

Goodes' health has dominated the AFL landscape in Sydney from the moment he reached for the back of his left thigh leading for a mark in the fourth quarter of the clash with Adelaide on May 5.

Coach John Longmire has patiently dealt with a barrage of questions during that time - when will he be back, how will the team operate without him, who will take his place, even if the Swans are a better side with him in it.

It has dragged on and on.

Much of the attention has been understandable given Goodes' obvious talent and influence on the side, not to mention his remarkable durability in a career where he had previously missed just seven matches in 13 seasons.

All indications point to Goodes' return for Friday night's crunch match against Geelong at the SCG.

"He's looking pretty well," Longmire said on Wednesday prior to training, kicking off hopefully the last round of repeat questions about the status of his co-captain.

"He did his first session on Saturday and then trained again on Monday and got through that really well, pulled up well yesterday, so at this stage we expect him to train today and play him."

Goodes was seen warming up and taking part in kicking drills before the Wednesday's training session was closed to the media.

Asked about his expected role, Longmire said: "We just expect him to come in and play a role like all the other players in our team.

"There's no expectation for him to come in to the team and dominate from the first bounce.

"We know he's a fit player, he can play forward, midfield, a number of roles for us, we just expect him to come in and contribute.

"We know he's a handy in for us."

Channel 7 clearly believes Goodes will play, using him in advertising for the big Friday night game.

Veteran journalist Mike Sheahan even suggested he had been told to have his chat with Goodes for his Open Mike program - which airs on Wednesday night - to coincide with the superstar's return to the field.

Longmire says Goodes boasts a level of professionalism rarely seen in his time in football.

"I think he played 202 games in a row (it was 204). You don't get to that sort of level without being an absolute professional with everything he does," the coach said.

"His attention to detail, our medical staff and our conditioning staff are constantly amazed at the lengths he goes to get himself right.

"Not just from an injury perspective, but to make sure he's right from a fitness and touch perspective when he comes back and plays.

"He's just an absolute professional."

Longmire confirmed that Ben McGlynn would return to the Swans side following his one-week suspension.
