SYDNEY SWANS coach Paul Roos has praised the performance of former Crow Marty Mattner, who was one of the red and white's best in its 40-point win over Melbourne at Manuka Oval on Sunday.
Roos said Mattner was critical to the Swans' first half when they set up the win with a 32-point lead at half-time.
"I thought he was outstanding. Probably when a few weren't going that well, I thought [Brett] Kirk, [Michael] O'Loughlin and Marty Mattner in the first half were really, really good and obviously 'Hally' [Barry Hall] early, but he probably just didn't nail his goals in the second quarter."
"I thought Marty really set the scene for the consistency, and he was one that worked hard all day, tackled really hard and kicked a couple of goals and he was a pretty significant player today."
Roos said the club was "really fortunate" to acquire Mattner via last year's trade period.
"You do a lot a work on bringing players in from other clubs and also your drafts and who you pick … so [we're] really, really fortunate we targeted him at the end of last year. We hoped to get him across the line and we did," Roos said.
"He's probably been everything and more than what we'd hoped this year."
