Sydney Swans defender Marty Mattner is expected to return to training this week after being a late withdrawal from Saturday night’s draw with Fremantle with hip soreness.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the defender is back on track after a week on the sidelines and should be available for selection for Friday night’s blockbuster clash with Collingwood at the MCG.

“He pulled up with a sore hip joint after the previous game and it was still sore come the main training session, so he wasn’t able to train and unfortunately couldn’t play,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“He’s improved since then and we’re expecting him to train tomorrow and then if that goes well, he’ll be back in.”

Fellow defender Rhyce Shaw is also a step closer to making his long-awaited return, with the 31-year-old set to join team training in the next week.

“He had a muscle strain in his lower abs and over a few weeks that settled down but he then developed a secondary problem around his groin, which took us a few weeks to get on top of as well,” Cameron said.

“He’s back running now and he’s back running and kicking, and starts his skill training at the end of this week and over the weekend and then should have a full week of training next week.”

Harry Cunningham will also take part in team training over the next week after five weeks on the sidelines with a torn medial ligament in his left knee.

“Harry is up and running now and is doing full agility and he’ll be doing skill training at the end of this week and on the weekend and into next week as well,” Cameron said.

In other injury news, Cameron said draftees Tim Membrey and Matthew Dick were expected to line up for the Swans reserves this week after the pair missed last weekend’s clash with Queanbeyan with hamstring soreness.

“They just had minor hamstring soreness last week and we just took a precaution to just leave them out and allow them to fully recover,” he said.

“They will both be attempting to train tomorrow and are both looking good.”

Meanwhile, Cameron said that rookie ruckman Sam Naismith is likely to be back on the field after the bye following a bout of knee tendonitis.

“He had tendonitis in his knee, which has taken a while to get on top of, but he has started running again now,” Cameron said.

“It has been a bit of time now since he’s played, so in a way he’s now got to get his running fitness up, so he’s going to have a mini pre-season now in preparation to sort of have a crack at the second half of the year.”
