The Swans Reserves posted a 41-point win over Eastlake on Sunday, fielding their best team of the year in overcast but fine conditions at the SCG. Eastlake kicked five goals to one in a patch late in the third quarter and early in the last before the Swans kicked five goals in a row to seal the win.
Best afield for the Swans were veterans Nic Fosdike and Ben Mathews, playing in the midfield, Heath Grundy, centre half forward, and Luke Brennan, centre half back. Matthew O’Dwyer who played on the wing and Tim Schmidt, in the midfield as well, were also good.
Top-up player Dane Rampe led the goal scoring for the Swans with four goals while Ed Barlow kicked three and Grundy kicked two. Nine other Swans players also kicked goals.
Eastlake opened the goal scoring just two minutes into the game but the Swans kicked four goals before Eastlake could kick their second. Rampe marked and goaled from 20 metres out, six minutes into the quarter and at the thirteen minute mark Barlow snapped his first. Top-up player Michael May kicked one from 40 metres out as did Barlow after a mark for his second. After Eastlake kicked their second goal, Luke Brennan goaled on the run to put the Swans 22 points in front at quarter time.
In the second quarter the Swans got off to a good start kicking four goals through Rampe, Mathews, and two from Grundy, before Eastlake had the chance to post one. At the 22 minute mark Nick Smith kicked a goal on the run before Eastlake kicked two to cut the margin back to 31-points by the main break.
By three quarter time Eastlake had the margin pegged back to just 20-points after kicking five goals to three. Goal kickers for the Swans were Jesse White, Schmidt and Rampe.
Eastlake opened the last term with their eleventh goal but were then kept goalless until the final minutes of quarter. Nick Davis kicked the Swans’ first goal of the quarter after a mark from 45 metres prior to Barlow kicking his third from 15 metres out on an angle. O’Dwyer, Matthew Beckmans and Rampe also goaled for the Swans.
The Swans will now take on competition front runners Belconnen on Saturday June 7 at Manuka Oval at 2pm.
