A host of Sydney Swans players are set to throw their support behind a vital initiative for mental health on Saturday.
Midfielder Isaac Heeney and ruckman Sam Naismith are just a couple of Swans gearing up for the Cycle to End the Cycle, a 12-hour bike ride through Maroubra that strives to raise awareness for suicide prevention and end the mental-health cycle.
All funds raised will be donated to mental-health organisations R U OK? and the Black Dog Institute.
Swans Player Development Manager Dan Ryall, recently welcomed on board to work in the area of player welfare with Sydney’s first- to third-year footballers, says the fight against mental health is crucial.
“Particularly to boys at this age that are at the Club, it’s one of the biggest issues facing young men,” Ryall said.
“And given the boys have a profile it’s great they can get out and raise a bit of awareness in the community.
“The fact a few of the boys are getting behind the Cycle to End the Cycle is reflective of the values of the Club. We encourage the boys to get out and be active in the community. It shows they’re good characters and that’s something we value highly.”
