Sydney Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh will face a fitness test ahead of this Saturday night’s semi final against Carlton at ANZ Stadium, while Adam Goodes and Lewis Roberts-Thomson remain in the mix to return to the field this week.

Club physiotherapist Matt Cameron confirmed that McVeigh, who suffered a minor knee injury late in the Swans’ loss to Hawthorn last Friday night, had pulled up well from the collision and was likely to train fully later in the week.

“It was a bit awkward and he twisted his knee a little bit,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“Fortunately he hasn’t done much damage at all and he’s moving really well today, so we expect him to be able to train (on Thursday).”

Dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes returned to team training on the weekend and also took part in the Swans’ first session of the week at the SCG on Tuesday.

Goodes moved freely in Tuesday’s session and took part in running and skills drills as well as match practice, where he lined up in the forward role.

Cameron said the decision about whether Goodes would make his long-awaited return to the field would be made at the end of the week.

“He started training with the reserves grade team on the weekend,” he said.

“He’ll be training fully this week and we’ll see how he copes with that.”

Lewis Roberts-Thomson also took part in Tuesday’s session and could also be named to play this weekend.

“He started training a couple of weeks ago, so he’s in his third week of training,” Cameron said.

“He probably would have played last week if there was a game in the reserves grade competition.

“He’s fully training with extra running, so he’s likely to be playing somewhere this weekend.”
