A squad of 40 players that is in contention for selection for the 2022 Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year has been announced with three Sydney Swans players included.

Will Gould, Lewis Taylor and Joel Amartey have all been recognised for their consistent seasons in the competition and were named in the squad.

The trio will be looking to continue their stellar seasons throughout September.

Amartey, who played in the AFL side in Rounds 3-12-17-18-19-20 this season, is in line for a key forward spot in the Team of the Year after averaging 3.0 goals, 6.8 marks, 15.1 disposal and a 4.1 hit-outs through 12 VFL games.

He is fourth on the VFL goal-kicking table with 36 behind Gold Coast’s Chris Burgess (52) and Box Hill pair Fergus Greene (49) and Ben Cavarra (41).

Taylor, whose only AFL appearance this year was as the unused medical substitute in Round 15 against St.Kilda, ranks 12th in aggregate VFL possessions despite playing only 14 of a possible 18 games, and has averaged 29.3 possessions per game.

And Gould, still waiting for his chance at AFL level after being the Swans’ second pick at #26 overall in the 2019 AFL draft, shares with Lachlan Rankin and Corey Warner the distinction of being the only Swan to play all 18 VFL games. He has averaged 18.9 possessions in a fine all-round campaign.

The Swans take on the Casey Demons in the qualifying final on Saturday in Melbourne.

The final team will be named on Monday September 12, as part of the 2022 VFL and VFLW Awards.

Minor premier Casey Demons have four players named in the squad, along with the Box Hill Hawks and Werribee.
