Sydney Swans General Manager of List Strategy and Recruitment Kinnear Beatson spoke to Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio this morning (Tuesday October 11, 2022) to chat all things red and white, providing updates on the Sydney Swans approach to the off-season plus comments on Aaron Francis and some of the club's recent re-signings.

Aaron Francis

There are two things we are trying to achieve out of this trade period and that is to bring Aaron in, we are hopeful we are edging closer to that. That might involve a three way deal with Melbourne which we are exploring at the moment.

The other part is we hold selections 14 and 17 and we are open minded with what we do with them. We would like to get into the point end of the draft, we are not sure if that will be possible, but we can explore that.

Aaron is quite clear in his own mind that he needs a fresh start in a different state, get out of the bubble.

I know that was something that went through his mind when he looked at going back to Adelaide.

In the end, he understood if he came to Sydney that same bubble is not there so he could just walk around as Aaron Francis and the public won't know who he is and they won't care.

He has good closing speed and can certainly intercept mark in the back six so it would complement what we have down there with Paddy, Tom McCartin and Dane Rampe so it allows us to have a bit more flexibility down there.

Tom Papley

We were talking to his manager, and we thought it would take longer than what it did [his re-signing] but in the end it happened very quickly so that was a pleasant surprise for us.

For Tom, I think it was just about the security. He is really settled, him and his partner, in Sydney so it is fair to say we were surprised at how quickly it got done but it was a win-win for both of us.

Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills locked in for the long term

It was absolutely part of our strategy.

With your stars and your marquee players, it is important to have them locked in so you can work around the rest of the list from them.

Chad Warner

He is a beauty. He is locked in to 2025.

We knew he was a fierce competitor and had a bit of latent speed. He has become a very influential player.

Sam Naismith

Sammy's still on what you would call 'a hold' with us, with list spots.

He's only just started his rehab from his third knee reconstruction so it's a wait and see unfortunately for Sammy.

I feel for him, sometimes the game can be brutal especially on the injury front and the opportunities they get.

Will Gould

I expect him to take his chances.

Will knows where he is at and the areas he needs to improve. The coaching panel have been very clear with him on the areas he needs to improve to get a game. He has taken that on board and we are pleased to have him for another year because he was playing very well at the end of the year.

He was really unlucky not to debut, towards the end, but we didn’t get injuries in that back six so it was a hard team to crack.

Lance Franklin

I don't think it was an issue of whether Lance would go and play somewhere else.

I think it was just Lance and Jesinta working out where their family was at. Was it the right time to relocate? Also, Lance being confident in his mind that he had another year left in him, which clearly he did.

We looked at our list and thought if he's not here then we've still got to find another 50 goals from somewhere and while Logan (McDonald) is developing and that, Bud being out there takes a lot of heat off those young forwards so it's a pretty good match for us.
