2013 in review: Qualifying Final
After a tight first half, the Swans were made to pay for missed opportunities as eventual premiers Hawthorn powered home at the MCG
A home preliminary final and a week off was up for grabs for both teams as the Sydney Swans took on Hawthorn without their superstar pairing of Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli.
In an absorbing, bruising opening half, the teams couldn’t be separated at the main break as both sides threw everything at the contest.
After half-time, it was all one way as the Hawks dominated across the ground kicking seven of the last nine goals on their way to a 54-point victory.
"The second half, we just didn't get our hands on it, and every time we did we turned it over," coach John Longmire said after the match.
"They made us pay going back the other way. In the first half we were pretty competitive, [but] to fall away badly in the second half was disappointing."
