Sydney Swans co-captain Callum Mills kicked off his eighth AFL season against the Gold Coast Suns last weekend with a goal and seven tackles to his name.

Ahead of the club’s first home game of the 2023 season the midfielder is more focussed on the ongoing performance of his team.

“I’m just looking forward to this year,” the leader told reporters in a Friday press conference.

“We have a few exciting games against us and we’re looking forward to knuckling down and getting into them.”

Despite going down to Essendon by 59 points in Round 1, the Swans side isn’t underestimating their opponent.

“[The Hawks] can be really dangerous especially in the way they move their footy,” Mills said.

“A lot of the young guys can be really damaging players if you let them play the way they want to. We have to be really sharp this week and expect a fierce contest.”

The Bob Skilton medallist is in his second consecutive year with the leadership group. When asked on the evolution of his captaincy, the 25-year-old told journalists he is inspired by former leaders of the club.

He also cited senior coach John Longmire and former players Kieren Jack and Josh Kennedy.

“The good part about being the captain of this footy club is that there’s a lot of good leaders and a lot of great leaders that have come before us that are still at the club; Jarrad McVeigh, Dean Cox," Mills said.

“They were really helpful and always passed on the baton and I hope to do the same thing.”

The Sydney Swans will play Hawthorn at the SCG on Sunday, March 26 at 1:10pm. Visit the Match Day Hub for more.
