SWANS co-captain Craig Bolton says Saturday's blockbuster against Geelong is the perfect preparation for his team's upcoming finals campaign.

Bolton made the comments as the Swans hang on grimly to fourth spot on the ladder with just three rounds remaining in the home and away season.

The tough defender says the premiers present an ideal challenge as his team tries to hang on to the double chance.

"Coming into finals time you want to be playing good football and these are the sorts of teams (Geelong) you could be playing come September," Bolton said on Tuesday.

"With big crowds and a lot of pressure with everything on the line, it's a good dress rehearsal."

The Swans' thrilling four-point win over Fremantle last weekend snapped a two-game losing streak, and kept their noses in front of North Melbourne (fifth on percentage) and Adelaide (a game behind in sixth).

If ladder positions remained as they are now, the Swans would meet Geelong in the first week of the finals, but Bolton said he is only focusing on Saturday's clash at ANZ Stadium.

"We're obviously not looking too far ahead and we've not been playing as well as we'd like … we've got three weeks to rectify that.

"We want to get some runs on the board going into the finals and hopefully consolidate after last week's game."

Bolton described last Saturday's come-from-behind win over Freo as a grind, but one that would hold the team in good stead for the weeks to come.

Looking towards the Cats challenge, the Swans co-captain said it was hard to pinpoint a weakness in the Geelong set up, but noted that the home team would be backing itself against the premiership favourites.

"We won't be intimidated by them, but they're one of those sides that don't have a major weakness: backline, really good through the midfield and some quality forwards.

"They're a real even spread with guys all over who pop up and kick goals. Guys like Mathew Stokes, Steve Johnson or Gary Ablett ... they don't rely on any one forward and as a defence it makes it harder to plan against.

"It's going to have to be a really consistent effort this week and come up with a few things in the game plan to help us come out on top."

Bolton, 28, joked that he didn't know what game plan could be used to get over the top of the Cats. "Hopefully Roosy can come up with something."
