Marn Grook at the SCG returns in Round 11 as the AFL celebrates week two of Sir Doug Nicholls Round. The Sydney Swans will clash with Carlton this Friday night in a must-win match for both sides as the season nears the halfway point. Ahead of the game catch up on all the top headlines from this week, presented by Channel 7.

Marn Grook at the SCG

This Friday the Swans will celebrate Marn Grook at the SCG when they take on Carlton in Round 11 of the AFL season.

The two sides will play for the Marn Grook Trophy, first introduced in 2002, to pay tribute to First Nations peoples and culture. The Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal will also make a return in 2023, awarded to the best on field in honour of club greats Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin.

Attendees of Friday’s night game are encouraged to arrive early and watch the Marn Grook ceremony and team entry from 7:30pm.

Chad Warner to play 50th game

Chad Warner is slated to play his 50th game this Friday night against Carlton after making his AFL debut for the red and white in 2020.

The young star was recruited with pick 39 of the 2019 AFL Draft and has since become a crucial element in the Swans midfield.

Warner currently averages 25 disposals a game and has kicked five goals for the club this season.

John Longmire: "We're building to get better."

Senior coach John Longmire answered questions from the media on Wednesday (May 24) and touched on the Swans' growing injury list and last week's much-needed win against North Melbourne. 

“There are things to come out of the game that we thought we did well and things we can still improve on," Longmire said.

"We’re building to get better, putting personnel to one side, and we need to keep pressing forward."

Injury update

Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper provided an update on the injury list ahead of Round 11 against Carlton, revealing ruckman Peter Ladhams would be out for several weeks after sustaining a significant lateral ligament injury to his ankle in last week's match. 

Elsewhere, Joel Amartey is improving and is expected to return to play after the bye while Dane Rampe has increased his strength work and is in full contact training.

Luke Parker leads the Swans for 100 games

Round 11 will mark Luke Parker’s 100th game as co-captain for the red and white after he was elevated into the Swans Leadership Group in 2019.

The Swans veteran has played 270 games since his AFL debut in 2011, boasts All Australian selection and has won two Bob Skilton medals across his career. Parker leads the team alongside fellow captains Dane Rampe and Callum Mills.

Buddy set to surpass Doug Wade in all-time leading goal kickers

Lance Franklin requires just one more goal to surpass Doug Wade and sit in fourth spot of the ladder for all-time leading goal kickers. Buddy currently has 1057 goals to his name.

Tony Lockett leads with 1360 goals, followed by Gordon Coventry on 1299 goals and Jason Dunstall with 1254.
