The Sydney Swans will celebrate Heritage Week this round, paying homage to the club's South Melbourne roots for the match against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night.
The team will wear the famous red-V heritage guernsey, which they have worn in away matches since 2020. The guernsey was worn by South Melbourne dating back to 1932 and made famous by Bloods Legends including Bob Skilton, Peter Bedford, Bob Pratt, Ron Clegg and J.Herbie Matthews.
The club is 149 years old in 2023 and it was on June 19, 1874, that a group met at Temperance Hall and the red and white received its birthright.
Four weeks later, on July 15, it was named the South Melbourne Football Club. It was the beginning of a club that would go on to be known as the 'Bloods' for its grit and determination.
To mark Heritage Week the team we will reflect on our proud history across our Swans channels and also will also have an open Captain's Run session on the MCG on Wednesday afternoon with Swans members and fans encouraged to come and see the team.
Key timings for Open Captain's Run:
2:30pm: Gates Open
3:00 – 3:30pm: Captains Run on MCG
3:30 – 3:50pm: Autograph and photo ops
