Nathan & Ollie’s Story
"I am participating in the You Little Ripper challenge, raising vital funds for Redkite who have supported my family during the toughest time in our lives. I encourage you to let it rip with me this October" Nathan - Redkite family ambassador
Nathan Jepson is a young dad who never thought he’d hear the word ‘your child has cancer,’ and definitely did not think that they would be told to his son.
Nathan and Naomi lost their home in last year’s terrible floods. Then they were hit with more devastating news: their beautiful son Ollie had brain cancer.
“It was overwhelming in a way that no-one who hasn’t been through it can comprehend,” Nathan says.
“We’ve had no income since Oliver’s diagnosis, becoming permanent carers to better juggle Oliver’s hospital visits. So getting the Redkite’s vouchers for petrol and groceries has been a lifesaver.”
Since last September, Ollie has endured regular chemotherapy and radiation, sometimes with horrific side effects. He finds comfort in drawing and painting.
“Redkite’s Social Workers are so supportive and lovely with Ollie,” Nathan says. “And I’m talking to a Redkite Counsellor once a fortnight, to have a mental health break.”
Nathan says, “The support Redkite provides to us is life-saving. That’s why I want to be part of You Little Ripper, and help Redkite support other families like mine. Because thank you isn’t enough.”
A lifeline for families facing cancer
For years, Redkite has been helping families when their life is shattered by their child’s cancer diagnosis.
Every day in Australia, three families will hear the words: “your child has cancer”, and what they hear is “your child might die”. The life of that child, and of their entire family, will never be the same.
In the daunting, long and traumatic experience that follows diagnosis, a child needs as much stability and support from their family as possible.
But everyday Redkite sees, when a child’s life is in question, it can feel impossible for families to keep functioning and to hold it together not only for their sick child but for one another.
Redkite is a lifeline for these families – no matter where they live in Australia, no matter what cancer their child has, no matter what their socioeconomic background.
The money raised through You Little Ripper will ensure that Redkite can continue to give back to families some of what a cancer diagnosis can rob from them – a child’s potential, healthy meaningful connections with family and friends, mental resilience, and financial stability.
