After two consecutive wins the Sydney Swans will travel to Perth this week in the hopes of retaining a position in the final eight. Assistant coach Tanya Hetherington discusses our Round 9 win over Collingwood, and what will be required to secure the W against Fremantle on Sunday.
Another convincing display to take the win in Round 9. What was it that came together for the Swans side on Sunday?
I think we have been building nicely over the season and off the back of the Bulldogs display, the challenge was to step it up again and to the girls credit they did just that.
The third quarter was quiet. What was the message to players leading into the last 15 minutes?
There was a strong breeze favouring one end and we found it hard to exit our defensive 50 in the third quarter. The message at three-quarter-time was to take the game on and keep playing our way which we saw in that last quarter.
We travel to Perth this week. What are the challenges with a long trip like this?
Travelling to Perth is always a difficult assignment in this league whether it be the home crowd or getting used to the time difference. But I think travelling is a great asset to a young group to spend time together and connect.
Fremantle in Fremantle is always a tough ask. What are you focussing on this week in training to prepare?
Nothing changes for us preparation wise. We will keep honing in on what we have been working on all season and that is continual improvement. We feel the team is really building nicely and we look to keep adding to that every week.
Who has impressed you most this season?
It is hard to pinpoint one person. I believe the team as a whole has impressed me so much this season. But to get off the fence I am going to choose a back, mid and, forward. Those players being Brenna Tarrant in Defence - she has been solid as a rock. Tanya Kennedy in the midfield - she is a fierce competitor and has done multiple jobs for us this season. Then Rebecca Privitelli who has the stickiest hands in the competition!
