Sydney Swans midfielders Josh Kennedy and Dan Hannebery have fallen victim to each other's stellar seasons after placing fourth and fifth respectively in the 2015 Brownlow Medal.
On a night that belonged to Fremantle's Nat Fyfe (31 votes), Kennedy (25) and Hannebery (24) exchanged votes all night to claim a top five finish and help the Swans record the second highest tally of votes (94) per club behind West Coast (97).
Fyfe jumped out to what proved to be an unassailable lead, becoming the first player ever to poll 17 votes in the first eight rounds, to then hold on for the rest of the count despite missing four matches and a late challenge by reigning champ West Coast's Matt Priddis.
It came down to the penultimate round with Priddis unable to register a vote which handed Fyfe, who missed the final two rounds of the season, victory with a match to spare.
Camera flashes, a rye smile from the Docker and a rushed final round by AFL chief turned MC Gill McLachlan confirming a new champion had been crowned.
Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell (26) finished third ahead of a fast finishing Kennedy who shot to fourth by polling 11 out of a possible 12 votes to overtake his teammate.
Hannebery, who climbed as high as second in stages during the count, battled for votes with his counterpart and ultimately fell victim to Kennedy's amazing run of 11 consecutive matches of 30+ disposals.
This season is the third time of Kennedy's career he has finished with the most votes of any Swan, following on from 21 votes in 2014 and 19 votes in 2012.
In another feel good story for the Swans, the baton was passed from a retiring champion to a rising star with Adam Goodes and Isaac Heeney featuring in the votes.
Goodes recorded his 163rd vote after polling in the Indigenous Round clash against Carlton while Heeney claimed the first of what Swans supporters hope are many Brownlow Medal votes to come.
Tom Mitchell also starred, polling in five individual matches including two best-on-ground performances.
