Swans remember their debuts
With Harry Cunningham making his AFL debut tomorrow night, we’ve asked a few other Swans players of their debut memories…
When Harry Cunningham runs out onto ANZ Stadium tomorrow night to make his AFL debut he will embark on something he will remember for the rest of his life.
It’s a select group to have pulled on the red and the white of the Swans, and when he takes to the field, Cunningham will become the 1373th player to lay claim to having played a senior match for the club.
Some of the others who have gone before him have spoken to SwansTV about their memories from when they made their debut for the Swans.
300 games ago, Adam Goodes also made his debut in round one - against Port Adelaide at the SCG in 1999 - and finished with 11 kicks and a memorable goal in the Swans 29-point loss to the Power.
“I had my mum and two brothers up in the stand, and I remember kicking my first goal right in front of the Chairman’s Club, and I knew they were up there so I gave them a little wave,” Goodes said.
While still completing year 12, Dan Hannebery made his debut against Carlton in round 16 2009, which also coincided with the first Swans Hall of Fame function, which was held in Melbourne that night.
“It was an amazing day,” Hannebery said. “I wasn’t expecting it, it came up very quickly and it was all a blur.”
“Just running out was a bizarre feeling, a great feeling, and something I’ll always remember.”
Nathan Gordon and Luke Parker both made their debuts in consecutive weeks last year, Gordon getting the call up against the Western Bulldogs in round 7, and Parker the next week in round 8 against Port Adelaide.
“(I) was pretty nervous going into it,” Gordon said. “Lack of sleep and the nerves were ticking away, but just getting out there and getting through the first quarter (eased the nerves).”
Parker had to wait a little longer to taste the action in his first game, starting on the bench as the Swans substitiute.
“It was a bit different. I guess you’re warming up for three quarters … but when I got on it was just pretty much game mode,” Parker said.
