The Sydney Swans Reserves remain undefeated after round three of the AFL Canberra competition, beating Ainslie by 43 points on Saturday at the SCG.

The Swans played lacklustre football in the first half and trailed at half-time but turned the match after some strong words from the coaching staff during the break.

Ainslie led by five points at the first break after kicking three goals to the Swans two. Daniel Currie opened the scoring with a goal 10 minutes into the term after taking a diving mark 30 metres from goal. Ainslie kicked their first from a free kick a few minutes later before Henry Playfair snapped a goal from 40 metres. Ainslie kicked two more goals before the end of the quarter.

After a seven goal to four quarter, the Swans trailed by 21 points at half time. Lewis Johnston goaled twice, once on the run from a metre out and again five minutes later after playing on from a mark at 55 metres. Two minutes later Patrick Vezspremi kicked his first on the run after a great marking attempt from Paul Bevan and at the 15 minute mark Gary Rohan kicked the Swans’ last goal of the half from 60 metres on the run. Both teams were playing quick football with the high level of pressure creating mistakes from both sides.

In the third quarter the Swans’ turned the game around, kicking seven goals while Ainslie managed only three. Trent Dennis-Lane goaled on the run five minutes in and by the ten-minute mark Ed Barlow and Johnston had also kicked majors. Ainslie kicked their second and third goals for the quarter within a minute but the Swans responded with four more. Veszpremi kicked his second at the 15 minute mark and his third a few minutes later after a mark 60 metres out. Dennis-Lane goaled from the boundary and Rohan kicked his second for the game after a series of short passes by the Swans. At three quarter time the Swans were leading by seven points.

The final term saw the Swans kick away to the final 43 point margin, scoring eight goals to two. They started the quarter with three goals in three minutes from Johnston, Veszpremi and Playfair before Ainslie responded with two quick goals. But then the Swans went on a goal spree. Barlow kicked a quick left foot goal from the boundary, Playfair kicked his third from a mark after a centre clearance and Dennis-Lane kicked truly after a brilliant run through the centre from Rohan. At the 17-minute mark Veszpremi marked and kicked his fifth goal and Dennis-Lane ended the game with his fourth, from the boundary.

Dylan McNeil was again the Swans’ best and bigmen Mike Pyke and Daniel Currie were standouts. Veszpremi, with five goals, Matthew O’Dwyer and Johnston were also named in the best.

The Reserves will now meet Eastlake at the SCG on Saturday 1 May at 3.50pm. The game is the curtain raiser to the Swans and Lions game at 7.10pm.
