The Sydney Swans secured a home preliminary final with a 24-point qualifying final victory over Fremantle at ANZ Stadium.
Lance Franklin, Josh Kennedy, Ben McGlynn, Mike Pyke and Craig Bird were all welcome inclusions for the Swans as they looked to avoid a repeat of Fremantle’s last qualifying final outing – when they upset Geelong at home in 2013.
As was expected between the two sides, it was a tight and contested opening half with only one straight kick the difference between the two sides at the main change.
With one goal to his name at three-quarter time, Lance Franklin burst into action in the last term, kicking two brilliant goals to help secure a home preliminary final and a week off for the Swans.
Luke Parker (32 disposals), Dan Hannebery (27), Ben McGlynn (three goals) and Lewis Jetta (25 disposals, seven inside 50s) were all crucial for the Swans, while Franklin finished the match with an impressive 18 disposals, seven marks and three goals.
Speaking after the match, Swans coach John Longmire said Franklin was given more license to roam through the middle in the final term.
"We just thought his kicking ability up through the middle of the ground – he's a beautiful field kick as well as a kick for goal," Longmire said.
"His speed, plus taking away their reference point where their extra (defender) was going, he got involved and was pretty hard to stop when he's running around like that.
"And he can kick it from so far out, it was a combination of all those things, and it worked OK."
