An electric eight-goal opening quarter from the Sydney Swans VFLW side has set up the red and white for a dominant 85-point victory over Casey Demons in Round Five of the rebel VFLW competition at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday (April 20, 2024) afternoon.
Following commanding victories over the Bulldogs and North Melbourne over the past fortnight, the Swans continued to impress this pre-season as they secured a 16.7.103 to 2.6.18 victory.
The quick start found the Swans hitting the scoreboard early and often, with new recruit Giselle Davies, Cynthia Hamilton and Montana Beruldsen all impressing early with two majors each in the first quarter.
The red and white carried their momentum into the half time break to kick a further three goals to take a 53-point lead at half time.
With 20 AFLW listed players, the side continued to exert it’s dominance in the second half, with an individual effort from Chloe Molloy a highlight early in the third quarter.
While keeping Casey goal-less for the second half, the side went on to kick four goals in the third quarter and followed up with a further five goals in the last on their way to the dominant victory.
Davies and Hamilton proved great targets up front, kicking three majors each, while Bella Smith, Montana Ham and Beruldsen all finished with two goals.
Molloy, Sofia Hurley, Sarah Grunden and AFLW train-on Brooke Bailey all kicked one goal.
2023 Club Champion and midfielder Laura Gardiner was busy on her way to a game high 42 disposals, four tackles. Young midfielders Ham (26 disposals, two goals), Hurley (23 disposals, four tackles, one goal) were busy while Ruby Sargent-Wilson (20 disposals, two tackles) and Ella Heads (19 disposals, two tackles) had strong performances in their first VFLW game of the season.

The Swans VFLW side will head south to face the Box Hill Hawks on Sunday, April 28 in Round Six.

The 2024 NAB AFLW Season will commence during the final week of August, with opening round set to coincide with the AFL season's pre-finals bye. The countdown to the side's official pre-season begins on Monday, June 3 but players have begun returning on their own accord to begin their preparations ahead of the 2024 season.
