Road safety will be in the spotlight at the SCG this Saturday as Transport for NSW partners with the Sydney Swans in an eye-catching visual reminder of the dangers of distracted driving.
A 33-metre "red road" will be laid out on Driver Avenue outside the SCG, demonstrating to everyone how far they travel blind if they are driving a car travelling at 60km/h and look at their phone for two seconds.
Transport for NSW Director of Road Safety Strategy and Policy Ralston Fernandes said there will be road safety messaging throughout the SCG, including Towards Zero branding on Sydney’s run-out banner.
“We know just about every single fan heading into the match tomorrow is going with their phone in their hand. Mobile phones are a part of life, but we also know they can be a dangerous distraction when you’re behind the wheel,” Mr Fernandes said.

“The red road outside the stadium is a strong visual reminder about the potential impact glancing at that phone while driving at 60km/h can have – you travel the length of that red road in two seconds, that’s 33 metres – it only takes a second for something to go wrong.”
The NSW Government, in collaboration with the Sydney Swans, is proud to continue their enhanced partnership aimed at promoting road safety awareness.
Transport for NSW has long been committed to promoting safer behavior on NSW roads through strategic partnerships, and its continued collaboration with the Sydney Swans is an excellent opportunity to reach thousands of people on game day.
The Sydney Derby between the Sydney Swans and GWS is not just a sporting event; it's a platform to increase conversation and awareness to deliver critical road safety messages to thousands of fans.
“Road safety is of key importance to the NSW Government, and we are always looking at different ways to engage people and get the message out about making safer choices on our roads,” Mr Fernandes said
