Welcome back to our series Behind the Banner. To celebrate 150 years of South Melbourne and the Sydney Swans, banners throughout the 2024 AFL season will be a nod to our long history.
Round 2 of the 2006 AFL season was an iconic day in the club's history when the 2005 Premiership Flag was unfurled at the SCG. The Grand Final win ended a 72 year premiership drought and the banner on April 9 was a fitting ode to the occasion.
"Celebrating 25 year of Blood, Sweat & Cheers. Sydney's Own, Sydney Swans. 1982 - 2006," it read.
Just over 18 years later and the same banner honoured our Hall of Fame Game, following the induction of 2012 Premiership coach Paul Roos and players Jarrad McVeigh, Nick Smith, Heath Grundy and Kieren Jack.
The five Swans stars completed a lap of honour ahead of Friday night's clash before a thrilling match up against Collingwood. The banner was slightly changed to reflect our long heritage.
"Celebrating 150 years of Blood, Sweat & Cheers. South Melbourne - Sydney. 1874 - 2004."
While Port Adelaide spoiled the party in 2006 it was the Swans in 2024 who secured a clutch three-point victory over the reigning premiers. Bloods culture alive and well.
