Welcome back to our series Behind the BannerTo celebrate 150 years of South Melbourne and the Sydney Swans, banners throughout the 2024 AFL season will be a nod to our long history.

On August 5, 2006 the Sydney Swans ran out onto the SCG in front of 25,000 loyal fans for a clash with Essendon. Earlier in the season the Bombers had won against the Swans by 27 points - Round 18 was a chance at redemption.

It was a bold decision then to write, "Is Don is good, is Swans is better" on the run out banner, but it would ultimately ring true. Four quarters later the red and white were victorious with a 43-point triumph over the visitors.

The 2006 banner served as the inspiration for Saturday night's banner as we continue to celebrate our 150th season. In similar fashion our 2024 team secured a 39-point win, dashing the Bombers finals hopes at Marvel Stadium and retaining the top-of-table position heading into Round 24.

The Swans return to the SCG this Saturday night to host the Adelaide Crows for the final match of the home-and-away season. Get tickets here
