Former Sydney captain Stuart Maxfield has been invited to present the 2024 AFL Premiership Cup should the Sydney Swans win Saturday’s match at the MCG.
Originally recruited by Richmond in 1990, Maxfield joined the Swans in 1996 and went on to play 200 games in the red and white before retiring at the end of the club’s 2005 Premiership year.
Maxfield was instrumental in turning the Swans’ fortunes and culture around and was appointed club captain in 2003 after the great Paul Kelly retired.
With his trademark speed and deadly left boot, Maxfield is still a Bloods fan favourite, also kicking 87 goals in his time with Sydney.
After retirement, Maxfield stayed with the Sydney Swans in several roles including recruiting, player development and later as an opposition analyst until 2020.
Maxfield said it’s a great honour to be given the opportunity to present the cup on Saturday.
“I have so much respect for our club, so it’s a great honour to present the cup on Saturday if the Swans get up,” Maxfield said.
“The team has embraced every challenge this season and have earned the right to play off in the Grand Final.
“It takes a full club commitment to get to this point and I wish everyone all the best.”
Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley said Maxfield is a fitting choice.
“When it comes to having an impact on our club Stuart Maxfield stands amongst those who have left a lasting legacy. During Stu’s time as captain, he set the foundations for not only the team that he led, but the generations of playing groups to come,” Harley said.
“We’re thrilled that Stu will present the cup if we win on Saturday. It’s been a huge year for our club, marking 150 years from South Melbourne to Sydney, so it’s incredibly special that we have the chance to contest this year’s AFL Grand Final – and we can’t wait for that first bounce at the MCG.”
