Sydney Swans Alana Woodward has called time on her AFLW career, effective immediately.
The 34-year-old was due to return from a hand injury, before suffering a knee injury during training. Scans later revealed Woodward had partially torn her Anterior Cruciate Ligament and would require surgery.
Woodward begun her AFLW career at Richmond, heading to St Kilda after two seasons, before joining the Sydney Swans in 2022.
The medium defender would go on to play 18 games across three seasons in the red and white.
Her experience and natural leadership skills were recognised when Woodward was named in the inaugural leadership group in 2022. Fittingly, she was then awarded Best Club Person at the first ever AFLW awards night.
Woodward is a highly respected member of the Sydney Swans who also plays a role working for the club’s partnership team.
Sydney Swans interim Executive General Manager – AFLW, Amanda Turner thanked Woodward for dedication and commitment to the club.
“Alana is a highly valued member of the Sydney Swans, we are devastated to see injury cut her time short this season,” said Turner.
“Alana has shown wonderful dedication to this club and has been a great leader as our young AFLW team continues to develop.”
“In true Alana fashion, she has already commenced playing an important role supporting the team as they continue to build this year.”
“We thank Alana for her commitment to the Sydney Swans on the field and look forward to working with her in an off-field capacity as the 2024 season continues.”
