Six Sydney Swans players and four Swans coaches have been named in the 2024 NSW State-of-Origin Team, announced by the NSW Australian Football History Society.
Sydney Swans co-captain Dane Rampe has been named as captain with Jarrad Witts, the Gold Coast Suns ruckman and skipper, as vice-captain.
Isaac Heeney, who won this year’s Carey Bunton Medal for the best player from NSW in the AFL this season, was selected in the midfield.
Other Swans selected include QBE Sydney Swans Academy alumni Nick Blakey, Errol Gulden and Braeden Campbell, along with Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award finalist, Harry Cunningham.
John Longmire has been named as the senior coach of the team. Longmire played Origin for NSW in 1988 and 1990, and originally hailed from Ovens and Murray League club, Corowa-Rutherglen. Meanwhile Swans assistants Ben Mathews, Mark McVeigh, and Jarred McVeigh have been named on the coaching panel.
In announcing the NSW State-of-Origin team for 2024, NSW Australian Football History Society patron Richard Colless, who leads the selection process said, “This year’s team was chosen from the 56 players from NSW on AFL senior lists”.
“I want to thank the selectors, Gerard Healy, Mike Sheahan, Mark Maclure, and Wayne Carey, and Rod Gillett for their efforts and commitment to selecting the team each year”.
“Also, to Daniel Hoyne from Champion Data whose input provided the selectors with insight into the match statistics for each player from NSW in 2024”.
“We were very pleased to again have the support from the AFL Coaches Association for the voting system for the Carey-Bunton Medal. Thank you to Alistair Nicholson and his team at the AFLCA”.
