In a late change to the Indigenous All-Stars squad, Sydney Swans defender Joel Hamling will join the team for Saturday's Indigenous All-Stars clash at Optus Stadium.

The versatile Hamling replaces Fremantle captain Alex Pearce, who has been ruled out with an ankle injury.

Hamling, of Yorta Yorta Indigenous descent, will bring his leadership and experience to the All-Stars side. The 31-year-old arrived at the Sydney Swans from Fremantle as an unrestricted free agent in October 2023. He has played 17 VFL games in the red and white since arriving in the Harbour City.

The inclusion of the defender-turned-forward adds further depth to the already talented lineup for the match, celebrating Indigenous culture and the talent of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players across the AFL.

"Joel’s experience and leadership will be a great asset to the team," said Indigenous All-Stars head coach Xavier Clarke.

"While we’ll miss Alex Pearce’s presence due to his injury, Joel’s addition strengthens our already talented squad. We’re looking forward to seeing the impact he’ll make in what promises to be an exciting and important match for the Indigenous All-Stars."

It's the first time the Indigenous All-Stars have been in action since 2015.
