Today, on World Down Syndrome Day, we join Down Syndrome NSW to raise awareness, challenge perceptions, and strengthen our commitment to creating a more inclusive society.
Together, we want to celebrate the incredible contributions and resilience of people with Down syndrome and their families and carers.

Changing perceptions: the importance of one word
One of the initiatives Down Syndrome NSW is delivering is the Congratulations Initiative. In addition to supporting parents through the early years, the initiative focuses on educating medical professionals on delivering a Down syndrome diagnosis with compassion.
Sean, a parent of a three-year-old with Down syndrome, explains why the initiative is so important.
“It would have been such a great experience if we received a ‘congratulations’ from the medical professionals instead of an ‘I’m sorry’. If I could change one thing in system that would be a big one,” he said.
Feedback like this is the driving force behind the creation of the Congratulations Initiative. The initiative offers up-to-date information about Down syndrome through Medical Professionals Packs and positions Down Syndrome NSW as a key support partner. Most importantly, it emphasises saying "congratulations" rather than "sorry."
