Have you noticed the starry design on our men’s training tops this season? The design is a nod to a very special anniversary of one of our club’s extraordinary moments.

This year marks 20 years since our 2005 premiership and Leo Barry’s match-saving heroics.

Barry played every game of the 2005 season, but undoubtedly the highlight for Swans fans came with seconds left in the fourth quarter of the Grand Final, when the Sydney Swans were leading the West Coast Eagles by a mere four points.

In a heart-stopping last roll of the dice the ball was booted deep into West Coast’s attacking 50 for one final chance at goal, by none other than Eagles champion and now Sydney Swans senior coach, Dean Cox.

As the ball floated into the forward pocket Barry flew from the side to take a fearless intercept mark amongst the pack.

The game defining moment was famously called by Stephen Quartermain, ‘Leo Barry, you star!’ he exclaimed.

The siren sounded moments later – the Swans holding on to break a 72-year premiership drought.

The starry design in our training tops this year pays tribute to that history-making moment.

Leo Barry of the Swans takes the pack mark in the final seconds to give the Swans victory at the 2005 AFL Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground September 24, 2005 in Melbourne, Australia.

Across his 237 games, forward turned defender Leo Barry kicked 56 goals, won the 2005 premiership, earned All Australian honours in consecutive years of 2004 and 2005 and was co-captain from 2006-2008.

In 2011, Leo Barry was inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame and his iconic mark was added into the Swans Heritage List. An apt reflection of his legacy and profound impact on the club.

Leo Barry remains an integral part of our club today as a director on the Sydney Swans board.
