Sydney Swans forward George Hewett believes the key to Saturday’s big win over Port Adelaide came down to the team’s selflessness, from the opening bounce right through to the final siren.
Sydney’s intensity and pressure was on song, particularly early where the Power were held goalless and the Swans piled on a season-best 7.6 in the opening term.
They led in a number of other statistical areas at quarter-time as well, including inside 50s (22-4), contested possessions (50-41) and uncontested possessions (67-47) while, despite controlling the disposal count, Sydney had only two less tackles (26-28).
Hewett, who collected 18 disposals in the 67-point win, said the manner in which they outmuscled Port in the opening stages really set the tone for the rest of the match.
“It was a really good win, we started as good as we have all year,” he said.
“We played like that for three and a half quarters so everyone, including the coaches, were really happy.
“From the first bounce were really selfless. We tackled well, our pressure was good and we just negated them so it was a really good performance.”
While Hewett wasn’t one of them, Sydney finished with 10 individual goal-kickers for the second consecutive round.
Four players finished with two goals each, including Isaac Heeney who’s struck some strong form in recent week.
Hewett said forward pressure – and subsequent scoreboard pressure – has been a key aim of the forward group all season knowing just how important it will be to Sydney’s fortunes in finals.
“That’s what we strive for, multiple goal-kickers,” he said.
“(Assistant coach) Brett Kirk keeps reiterating that so we’re very happy (in that area).
On Heeney, Hewett added: “He’s marked the slippery ball really strongly today. He always finds a way to play well in the wet and is going really well at the moment.”
