The Sydney Swans have on Monday night recruited ruckman Michael Knoll and midfielder Cody Hirst via the 2019 Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

The Swans moved retired footballers Kurt Tippett and Heath Grundy onto their inactive list, meaning they fronted Monday's draft as one of just four AFL clubs with two selections available.

They took the opportunity to secure 26-year-old Knoll from South Adelaide in the SANFL and 19-year-old Hirst from the Eastern Ranges in the NAB League.

Knoll measures at 205 centimetres and 103 kilograms, and although he primarily plays in the ruck, he can also do damage as a rotating key forward.

Hirst's chief trademarks are his blinding pace and substantial endurance capacity, which makes him a dangerous option on a wing, although he can also play a role as a small forward or a hard-running, rebounding defender.

Hirst had been touted as one of the Eastern Ranges' hottest 2018 draft prospects, but knee and collarbone injures limited him to just four games for the season.

Although he bounced back at the Rookie Me Combine late last year to break - not once, but twice - the agility record of Fremantle speedster Stephen Hill.

Sydney National Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple was rapt to welcome both Knoll and Hirst to the Swans.

"Michael has progressed really well in recent years," Dalrymple said.

"Ever since he got an opportunity to play at South Adelaide he's developed really well, and we hope that development can continue at the Swans.

"Cody's running is at a really good level and so is his agility. We think that as a small forward or on the wing he's got some really good qualities."
