Sydney Swans Hall of Famer Tony Lockett has called on members and fans to support him in a 1275-kilometre bicycle ride from Sydney to Geelong aimed to help cure cancer.
The greatest goal-kicker in VFL/AFL history, who graced the red and white between 1995 and 2002 after a distinguished 12 years at St Kilda, will participate in the Signature Tour hosted by Tour de Cure between May 3 and 11.
Lockett will join Seven Network journalist Mark Beretta and more than 100 other cyclists at Sydney’s Martin Place, with the nine-day ride trailing through Kiama, Canberra, Corryong and Central Victoria, before finishing at Beretta’s home in Geelong.
Lockett says the charity ride is an initiative worth backing.
“It’s a hell of a cause. We’ve come a long way over the years in searching for cures for all different types of cancers – and I don’t think we can rest up on it yet. Even though so much of a commitment has already been made, there is still so much that needs to be done,” Lockett told Swans Media.
“It would be great to one day be able to actually say we have a cure for cancer because it would help so many people and families.
“I’m happy to go along, join in and see if we can raise a few bucks, and I just want to do my bit.”
