The Sydney Swans Football Club would like to congratulate former Swan Tony Armstrong, who is set to become the first Aboriginal person in history to call play-by-play commentary on commercial radio.
Armstrong has provided special comments for Triple M during the 2019 season and is now set to make his play-by-play debut as Richmond clashes with West Coast at the MCG on Sunday.
The 29-year-old played 15 AFL games for Sydney in 2012 and 2013, and also spent time at Adelaide and Collingwood in a 35-match career.
Armstrong says his Indigenous heritage means a lot to him.
“I’m really excited and humbled by the opportunity to call this Sunday’s game,” Armstrong said.
“To be the first Aboriginal caller on commercial radio is something I’m really proud of.
“I’m a big believer in seeing and hearing more black voices across mainstream media, and at the moment there just aren’t enough.
“Being able to do something I'm so passionate about while representing my people and breaking a glass ceiling is an honour and not something I take for granted.
“I would like to publicly thank Ewan Giles from Triple M for giving me this opportunity and also recognise the work Andrew Underwood does for all Indigenous men and women wanting to get involved in broadcasting.”
