A growing passion for the red and white has seen the Sydney Swans reach a new membership record, with 60,934 people joining the team in season 2018.

Official AFL membership numbers were unveiled today with the league collectively passing one million members for the first time in history.

It’s the 18th consecutive year of growth with one in 24 Australians now a member of an AFL club.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has shown his appreciation.

“Whether you have been a member for decades or just signed up this year, on behalf of the AFL I want to thank every single one of you,” Mr McLachlan said.

“The commitment members make to their clubs is the key reason why our game continues to prosper.

“Our clubs give us a connection. Our games fill us with hope, despair and joy, and today it makes us proud.”

The Sydney Swans reached 60,000 members for the first time in history in May, representing massive growth from the 2,000 members the Swans had when they relocated from South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982.

The Swans are one of 13 clubs to break their all-time membership record this season.
